How to Paint by Numbers
- Each number equals one color.
- One number. One color.
- Paint slowly and stay within the lines.
- Use a small amount of paint for better control.
- Add a second layer if needed.
- If a section feels too small or tricky, simplify it or skip it.
- You can zoom in on the photo for better readability.
There are no mistakes — just your style.
Dont forget to enjoy the process.
1. Your Worlds in One Painting
Before you dip your brushes into the paint, divide the canvas into imaginary sections. You can split it exactly in half, or each of you can choose a specific part.
Just like in life, each of you has your own “sandbox” — your work, hobbies, and dreams. But even though you are painting your own section, together you are creating one inseparable piece of art.
Try asking each other:
• Why did you choose this particular part of the canvas? What drew you to it?
• What caught your attention about each other? Why did you choose to spend this evening with him/her, and why are you happy to be creating this piece together?
2. Breaking the Ice
Pick up your brushes and paint the areas marked number 0 and 1 on your part of the canvas.
While you paint, you can answer these questions for each other:
• Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn but never got around to?
• How do you like to recharge after a demanding day?
• What’s on your bucket list that you haven’t done yet?
• Who has been the biggest role model in your life and why?
• What are you most grateful for in your life?
• What is most important to you in a friendship or relationship?
• Imagine your house starts to burn. After saving your loved ones and pets, you only have time to take one more thing. What would it be and why?
3. Synchronization
Hold one brush together (one of you holding the bottom, the other the top). If it feels too difficult, move your hands closer together, or one of you can hold the other’s hand while painting.
Together, paint all the areas marked number 4.
Try to feel the movement of the other person. This is your first collaboration. Your first creation together. Enjoy it!
4. Minute of Silence
Put down your brushes and paints for a moment. For one full minute, look directly into each other’s eyes without speaking. Try not to blink and simply feel the energy of the moment.
5. Abstracting Feelings
Paint the areas numbered 3 and 7 (each partner paints one number).
Try to paint according to how you feel right now, but without using words. Your partner has to guess your emotion only from your brush strokes.
6. Scanning the Details
Look carefully at each other for 30 seconds.
Then both of you turn your backs and change one small detail about yourselves (for example roll up a sleeve, remove a ring, change your hairstyle). Turn back around and guess what has changed.
7. Precise Strokes
Paint the areas numbered 5. Choose one square and take turns painting. Whoever paints the most precise lines wins.
The loser must then say only compliments and positive things about the winner — until you finish all the areas numbered 5.
8. Like in a Movie
Paint the areas numbered 6 and 2. Imagine you are the main characters in a romantic movie. What song would be playing in the background during this scene where you are painting together?
Choose one song together, play it, and let the rhythm guide you. Sit close to each other and create together.
Imagine the scene: the camera slowly moves closer to your faces, capturing focused looks and subtle smiles… until it pulls away high above you.
Cut. Another chapter of your story is being written.
9. Two Truths and One Lie
Goal: Guess your partner’s lie while successfully fooling them with yours. The game continues until someone scores 2 points.
Take turns saying three statements about yourself. One of them is a lie. If nobody has 2 points after the first round, continue with new statements. The first person to reach 2 points wins and chooses the reward.
Winner’s reward: The winner chooses a dessert for both of you. If you’re watching your figure, the loser must give the winner one very specific compliment or a sweet kiss.
Scoring: You get a point if you guess your partner’s lie. You get a point if your partner fails to guess your lie (you fooled them).
Example round:
Round 1: Eva guesses, Adam lies. Eva fails → Point for Adam (1:0)
Round 2: Adam guesses, Eva lies. Adam guesses correctly → Point for Adam (2:0)
Adam reaches 2 points and wins.
(If Adam had guessed wrong in round 2, the score would be 1:1 and the game continues.)
10. The Secret Detail
Together paint the areas numbered 8. Then one of you closes their eyes or leans away so they cannot see the canvas.
The other person secretly hides one small detail somewhere on the painting — it can be a tiny heart, dot, initial, or secret symbol (even in an already finished area). Then switch roles.
Congratulations!
You have just created something that didn’t exist before. It doesn’t matter if you painted outside the lines — what matters is that you were in them together.
At the end, you can write today’s date on the canvas or create a shared signature or logo.
